CARBONERAS LOCATION

It is known that Carboneras has been inhabited since the 16th century, when the Marquis of Carpio, Don Diego López de Haro, ordered the construction of San Andrés castle to prevent the smuggling of Christians.

Traditionally, the population of Carboneras has been dedicated to fishing, although in some inland areas agriculture and livestock farming were also practised. However, mining, the hydroelectric industry and tourism have changed the appearance and sources of wealth of Carboneras, and the services sector has taken over the town.

Opposite the town you can find San Andrés island which is a Natural Monument where many divers can enjoy the wonderful places below the surface

The nearest town in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park is Agua Amarga.

What to see in Carboneras, interesting visits

San Andrés Castle, is a construction from the 14th century that King Felipe II ordered Marquis of Carpio to build. It is a solid quadrangular masonry construction, whose purpose was to defend the coast from attacks by the Berbers and the Moorish uprising, and is located in the centre of the town.

The Torre de la Mesa de Roldán is a watchtower that was first recorded in 1497. In 1764, during the reign of Charles III, its use was recovered.

Playa de los Muertos is one of the most famous beaches on the coast of Cabo de Gata. Behind its sad name hides one of the most beautiful corners of the Mediterranean.
